MakaFun is a social project co-founded by Kerry Halkett and Amanda Glennon, to bring together skills, knowledge, and professional experience in a holistic collaboration. Via MakaFun they provide support and services around communication to diverse communities and groups.
At MakaFun Kerry and Amanda aim to provide tips, support and lots of fun to model and demonstrate how to enhance activities to promote communication skills and language development.
MakaFun is a holistic, multi-modal service that shares ideas and tips with others, whilst offering to deliver MakaFun sessions alongside Makaton training. Kerry and Amanda believe that communication and language skills can be developed by using a multi-modal approach. Kerry and Amanda have found that by using fun, objects of reference, props, visual aids, Makaton symbols and signs, speech, songs, stories and activities within their MakaFun sessions, participants have engaged with and enjoyed the different differentiated activities. Participants have built on their own confidence in continuing to use their new skills/activities.
MakaFun sessions are designed to reflect the developmental needs of participants and can be used as an Early Communication Intervention to introduce communication skills and build on and extend established skills. MakaFun sessions are offered to children and young people along with a supporting adult, to have fun and learn together. This makes it a fantastic intervention for families to attend as well as sessions being delivered in community groups, libraries, nurseries and school settings.
